The preserved, stone-built, wide-fronted (captain's) 'red house' of Captain Rizos, shipowner of the time, dominates the Poros canal since 1851 and has now reached the 6th generation of the family.
A house full of history and memories that have remained alive from generation to generation. The poet Kostis Palamas also spent many summers in this house.
The House
The traditional wooden balcony is a witness of the transformations in time. One can imagine that 170 years ago, just below, the sea reached the door of the house where it led to the place where olive oil and lemons were stored. From there began their journey to the commercial sea lanes of Trieste and Odessa, Captain Rizos' three three-quarters sailboats.
Handmade furniture, mirrors and lamps of the last century, as well as family heirlooms decorate the house and betray its history.
Going up the wooden staircase, you see the spacious living room / dining room with the imposing view that travels you, feeling that you have boarded the deck of an old sailboat full of history. The fully renovated and equipped kitchen with its warm color and retro details, creates a feeling of sweet nostalgia.
There are three bedrooms in the house. In the first, the single bed is dominated by a playful mood with bright colors. In the second, above the double bed there is the headrest of Kostis Palamas (KMP 1883). In the latter, with the second double bed, the decoration with the English Admiralty maps and the nautical lamps, make the atmosphere smell like the sea.
The main bathroom and the WC have been recently renovated in harmony with the style and the decoration of the rest of the house.
Visitor access
The port, the market, the taverns and the nightlife are within walking distance (accessible on foot). The supermarket is located 100 meters from the house.
The beaches of the island are accessible by car or boat. There is a regular bus service every hour to the beaches of Askeli and Monastiri.
The stop of the local municipal bus is in front of the house, from where it passes every 20 minutes and serves Sferia, the smallest of the two islands that make up Poros.
